One benefit of vaporizing dry herbs is that the already-vaped herb still contains THC and CBD. After using your vaporizer to medicate, you can reuse the herb and extract every last morsel of goodness from it, ensuring that no good is wasted and giving you a better bang for your buck. So make sure you save all the vape waste as there are so many good ABV recipes. One of the best ways to take advantage of leftover wine is to infuse it into fat like butter or oil. Once infused, the liquid may then be used in any number of recipes. Here we will outline how to extract all the goodness found in your vape and create a flavorful, versatile cannabutter.
Getting started making cannabutter doesn’t happen right away, but don’t let this discourage you. Keep a glass jar next to you when you vape and put your used e-liquids in it. You’ll start saving up enough used e-juices for some baked goods before you know it. When storing your waste, it should have a golden brown color. This means it hasn’t been combusted and you can still retrieve the THC or CBD. If your bud has begun to blacken, you have gone too far and it should be disposed of. When making butter from your ingredients a good rule for getting the ratio is 15 milligrams of waste per 100 grams of butter. You can also add any leftover stalks and trim as well.
What You Will Need to Make ABV Butter
The most important thing you will need to make ABV butter is patience. You are going to find many infusions that claim to take only an hour or two, but if you want to be efficient, then it will take around 36 hours total to extract all of the goodness. The infusion process takes time, so be sure to put your butter in the refrigerator for some of the time during infusing. So, if you are planning to bake soon you will need to get started with your butter well ahead of time.
You will need a few basic tools to make your nut butter, the ones that are most often found in a kitchen. I use my crockpot (slow cooker) for this purpose because it prevents burning and ensures thoroughly cooked kinds of butter. Forget about baking your weed in the oven. The effects of THC and CBD are reduced when baked “too long” or at too high a temperature, meaning your brownies will not pack as much of a punch. However, you’ll need to check the temperature regularly. If you don’t have a spare 24 hours, use your Crock-Pot. You’ll also need a wooden spoon, cheesecloths, and a butter tub.
Items and Ingredients List
- Crock-Pot
- Cheese Cloth or Jay Cloth
- Pestle and Mortar
- Wooden Spoon
- Plastic Tub/ Bowl
- Butter (100g per 15g of vape poo)
- Already Been Vaped Material (AVB), ratio as above
- Water (250-500ml)
How to Make Butter from Vape Waste
As the material has been vaped, you do not need to decarboxylate it first. The process of vaporization has already activated the THC. So begin by grinding your ABV in a pestle and mortar until it is nice and fine. More surface area means more efficient infusion. This supports more efficient absorption because there is more surface area for infusion.
Butter, a vape cartridge, and water are going to be added to the crockpot and turned on at the lowest temperature for 24 hours. The butter will release its fat molecules to absorb THC and CBD from the vaporizer. Be warned this is very smelly and your entire home will have a fragrance of cannabis during this process.
Every 6-8 hours stir the bucket or container with a long-handled spoon. This will prevent the clumping of waste and give you an indication of your water level is too low. When cooking with butter, this technique will not only prevent the butter from burning but also help to remove some impurities later on.
After 24 hours prepare a bowl by attaching your cloth to the top, an elastic band or piece of string should do the trick. Grease and water from the crockpot will be drained onto a cloth leaving the meal on the cloth. The cloth will filter the sludgy mess that used to be bud, sticks, and trim. To get the most out of his butter, it is worth giving the cloth a gentle squeeze at the end to extract any remaining butter.
Place the pot/saucepan with your ingredients into the fridge for 8-10 hours uncovered. Once the butter and water have separated, you’ll be left with a foul-smelling greasy black liquid on the bottom while the white butter will sit at the top. Do not disturb the tub when setting, this will lead to solidifying butter breaking up and pockets of water accumulating in your butter.
To remove the butter, wait for it to solidify, and then cut around the perimeter of the tub with a knife. Pour out any dirty water from the pan before continuing, or rinse it out with clean water. Don’t forget about any leftover chunks of butter!
To store your ABV butter, tightly seal it in an airtight container and place the container in the freezer for later use.
Finally
You will notice that there is a little less butter than what you started with. I have found that out of every 100 grams of butter, 90 remain. If you follow these instructions correctly your butter will be a dark green color. It takes about 50 grams of butter to make 12-15 biscuits. Edible marijuana products can be appropriate for some people who consume daily, but if you haven’t had one before then we recommend starting with a small amount. Wait and see how it goes, the effects can manifest within two hours of consumption. Stronger than smoking or vaporizing, eat moderately for the first time.
